Mandatory server upgrade for the forums

Post by Gwyneth Llewelyn »

Hello fellow citizens,

I just got a notice that the operating system version of the server running these forums is outdated and that it won't receive any further updates... so I decided to upgrade it to a new version, that gets all the updates. Keeping an operating system up-to-date means less security issues, less bugs, less failures... so at some point there is no choice but to stop stalling the switch to the newer version, and just go ahead and do it :)

This means there will be unfortunately some service disruption (during the upgrade everything will work, until the server reboots, which should not take long but... afterwards there might be some need of 'house cleaning') which I predict that will happen in the next few hours. I hope it doesn't take too long and doesn't affect you too much!

Cheers,

- Gwyn

P.S. Note that this will NOT affect the Portal!

Sorry about that. As expected, there is always something that doesn't work quite right, but I think that I've nailed it down, and the forums should be up as usual!

A slight delay for the next hours until the cache gets rebuilt should be normal and expected. I personally didn't notice any difference in speed, but your mileage may vary...

It all seems to be seamless to me Gwyn; I didn't even notice a blip! Nice going :D

You're being kind, Rosie, according to my timing, it was 3 hours down :( ... because I had to track it down to a slight configuration change for using PHP 5.5.9, which was tricky to do, and in the mean time I had to go to shop for some food!

Clever Gwyn, to take care of server issues while some of us – at least – are fast asleep. :P

I'm evil and devious, Widget :) That was my whole point hehe...

Oh, and the good news is that when the forum went down, I got a text message on my phone. So finally I got the warning system working properly! This should — I hope — make future server failures much easier to fix! (or at least quicker!)

Agreed , Shep, that would be nice to have back, if possible.
