CDS Artist in Residence
A proposal by Rosie Gray and Kyoko Furse-Barzane
April, 2021
Definition of CDS Artist in Residence
An Artist in Residence is a real-life musician who performs in Second Life. A musician is defined as someone who plays a musical instrument and may also be a singer.
Why focus on musicians? Because, unlike visual artists, musicians don’t have a ‘thing’ in SL to sell duplicates of, and because in RL musicians are having a very hard time financially during the pandemic.
Up to 3 Artists in Residence will be allowed at one time.
Eligibility to becoming a CDS Artist in Residence
A musician applying to become a CDS Artist in Residence will need to provide some proof of their ability to perform live music in Second Life, either by providing links to their real life or second life website, social media etc., or by their renown in SL.
Selection Process
Any citizen may champion a musician to become an Artist in Residence. They would bring the musician’s name to the Chancellor for consideration. They must have personally attended at least one live-in-SL performance and be able to describe the performer’s style and ability. The musician being considered must consent to being considered for Artist in Residence.
The selection process will include at least one representative of the government attending a performance in SL.
The Chancellor will review the musician’s nomination for Artist in Residence and either decide in favour or reject the nomination and then bring it to the RA for approval.
The decision on selection must be completed within 1 month (but preferably sooner) of the application.
Time frame
Six months coinciding with the terms of the Chancellor and Representative Assembly, and possibly continuing on through following terms by mutual agreement of the musician and the Chancellor
Benefits to artist
The CDS will provide a home to the Artist in Residence tier-free for the time that they are Artist in Residence. The home parcel will be in one of the villages or towns of the CDS 6 regions. The tier expense will range in the L$600 to L$800 a month expense bracket.
The Artist in Residence will be encouraged to make the home their own and will be given the same permissions to the parcel as any purchaser would receive.
Owning the home as Artist in Residence will not bestow citizenship on the musician unless they also own another property under the citizenship requirements of the CDS laws.
Commitments of artist
The Artist in Residence agrees to perform a minimum of 1 x 1 hour event within the 6 month term in the CDS, with the time and event details to be agreed upon between the Artist and the Chancellor. They will be allowed to put out their ‘tip jar’ for the performance.
A plaque naming the musician as Artist in Residence will be supplied by the CDS management and must be displayed on the outside of the home where passers-by may see it.
The Artist in Residence will allow their name and image to be used by the CDS for promotional purposes.
Benefits to the CDS
The CDS will benefit by the performance of the Artist in Residence and the addition of them as a temporary part of our community.
The CDS will be able to publicize their presence and performance as part of the CDS Artist in Residence program.
