Chess, Anyone? Take note...

Post by Brian Livingston »

I was sorting through my inventory the other day when I came across two interesting objects that I think might help the CDS in its goal to help reconnect the community, if only by a small increment.

The first was an xyChess board, which is open source. Placed on the Platz, the forum or both, this would provide an activity for visitors and residents alike to partake in. The result would be increased communication and interaction amongst members of the community and our visitors, and perhaps increased traffic in each sim. Although installing these boards wouldn't cost anything monetarily, they would have some cost to the community in terms of prim and resource usage. A fully set board takes up some 200 or so prims, which is a decent amount of the reserve in NFS. However, given that these prims are not being used, I think it would be a helpful addition to the public spaces of our sims.

The second item was a bulletin board that allows anyone to add notes to it, permitting an easy, in-world communication medium for our community. I will be placing the bulletin board on my property in NFS later today to exhibit its possibilities.

The XY table is 264 prims when it is set up. I also have a full everything Mahjong table that is about 180 prims.

Great suggestions Brian, Dnate. Now, how do we make it happen?

I'm guessing that since land use is the Chancellor's prerogative, you would need to have a word with Aliasi to see if this could be tried out, perhaps on a trial basis, so that we can see how it works out.

I'm going to have to dust off my rusty chess skills! (And learn Mah Jong!)

Actually, I have a multi-game set made by Lex Neva that is both less primmy and more varied (chess, checkers, reversi, and go) I could set out.

Unlike xyChess, it doesn't auto-enforce rules or anything; you move the pieces with the standard building tools and the board will force to grid.

Still, fewer prims and a wide variety... and I already have one. I'll see about getting it out this evening.

I thought this was a very good idea, to have a public chess board in the NFS Marktplatz. :)
For one thing, that is fairly common in Fussgängerzone (Platz) areas in Central Europe.

What I was thinking of was a structural feature on the ground with large pieces, like this one in Sarajevo:

Here is another photo. These are not the largest I have seen, but are in Switzerland:

Now there is a small two-person board on a table that has been put in the Marktplatz near the Rathaus. That is OK, but it is not what I was thinking of.

If as a community we ever decide we want to build a chess board into the bricks of the Marktplatz, I found something that might be of interest.

On Webmatch sim there is a place called Chess Island (162,125,23) that has some very large, well-made chess boards. I found this in an advert in the AvaStar, Ausgabe 40 | 21-09-2007, page 28 ( yes, now you know: I am an AvaStar reader :D ).

Nikki, the question is if that should be bought, or be built by ourselves. If there were a sculptor and a scripter who are capable to do this, i would love to attend at least the scriptor's classes. Scriptor makes money, we get a bleeding edge chess, i have the chance to learn something, win, win, win.
I hope you have a little dirty sheet somewhere to backup your great ideas, forum search is sometimes tiring :)

I really have to ask, why do we want a big chess set in the Plaza?

There is a coolness factor that is hard to fully express! :)

It is very typical for Central Europe.

I'm not sure about elsewhere, but I have never seen one like that in North America.

I will admit, I am unsure on the complete culture of 14th century Germany, but was it common place then to have very large chess sets or is it more of a modern thing?

I am not sure when such chess boards started to be something for community gathering places. Surely they would not have been in existence in the 14th Century. At that time (in the Middle Ages) chess was reserved mostly for the nobility, because it had to do with strategic thinking.

Why did you ask about the 14th Century? Is Neufreistadt representative of that epoch?

I do think that giant chess sets were 17th C or later - probably 19th century woul dbe my guess.

Though I would not hold it against the covenant - since the MoCA is quite modern.

I don't know, I just thought that it was the time period. I could be a little early by two or three centuries or so.

Yes, I agree with this. The covenant allows buildings to be in the Bauhaus style, which would be 20th Century.
