[quote="Bromo Ivory":323x1ga0]I read some of the Caledon forums, and it seems the foray into Machinima and Role-Play has not been without some controversy though generally positive reactions - how is the participation and "fun factor" in that exercise thus far for the Caledon denizens? ( I do not trust the forums and blogs as true barometers of feeling)
Not that CDS is a RP area or even strongly themed (except in architecture).[/quote:323x1ga0]
I get a rather interesting picture from private IM's and notecards, but realise that what people tell *me* is often just as selective as what might be posted to a forum.
As I see it:
1) As hinted at by the literally dozens motivated enough to blog - LOTS of people are having LOTS of fun! Me included, when I get the chance! Though I can almost never show up for filming times due to either SL land business or first life necessity. Interesting point: note that the community does as it likes, when and how it likes and sometimes I'm told about it, sometimes not! This is wonderful and healthy.
2) Some that would prefer things to be done differently. The pattern I see is this: notes of concern whenever we try something new, so far overwhelmingly followed with 'how can I get in on this???' when that something turns out to be a smashing success. Most notably, Doing Something always turns out better than Standing Around Talking About Doing Something.
3) Many don't participate much or at all, simply because they are doing their own thing, which is fine.
4) It's good to do different stuff; nothing stays interesting and fun permanently. That said, there's some different stuff in the works.
5) I personally don't see any reason why you couldn't make films or interact with other groups as the CDS, just as we do with our little micronation state.
6) As an aside, since it began there has been a *strong* interest in Caledon land that has so far blown away anything I've ever seen. The waiting list went from 2 sims long to... well, something monstrous. Seems to be a fun-related factor, especially in light of the fact that the waiting list doesn't get that long unless very, very few people choose to leave (thus no openings to cool off the list).
My guess is that I'll sort of inadequately chase demand until maybe Oct/Nov or so, in which case I'll completely lose control of the situation, even whilst designing sims several at a time. I'm seriously contemplating what the maximum size of Caledon 'should' be, with my own sanity as part of the calculation. Not terribly interested in making Caledon into a Dreamland-sized... thing, nor too interested in starting a different venture.
I'd honestly suggest the CDS folk try some more long term activities, maybe on the order of 10 weeks or whatnot, if looking to have fun, expand and grow.
