Since SL opened up free accounts without validation, the whole community cried out loud that some form of age validation should be implemented by Linden Lab, to keep griefers and teenagers away from the mature, adult grid.
Linden Lab listened - they're soon going to introduce a opt-in validation system through a third party, not unlike what happens with many porn sites. This means that adult content will soon be viewable only by identity-validated avatars.
Not surprisingly, people did complain a lot about giving their RL data to a third party - which was not what apparently many had in mind when they demanded some sort of validation.
