Attention Chancellor Candidates

Post by Claude Desmoulins »

Per Article II, Section 5...

[quote:3a83vtb9]The Chancellor of the CDS shall be selected by the Representative Assembly from among any CDS citizen who shall make application to the RA.

The application period shall begin when the membership of a new RA is named and end the first day of the new RA term. This provision shall come into force with the next RA election following passage and ratification of this amendment. (ed. note: the Seventh RA)

The chancellor will serve a term ending with the election of the next chancellor by the incoming RA.[/quote:3a83vtb9]

This means candidates can apply from now until August 1. The phrase "make application to the RA" is vague. But one might suppose notecards, IMS, and/or public announcements in the forums could all suffice.

CARE Candidate for Chancellor

Post by michelmanen »

I have declared publicly before the start of the elections, on the forums, in the RA and at in-world public meetings that I shall stand as the CARE candidate for Chancellor and reiterate my intention to do so here.

As to be sure that I am not late, I myself am forming an exploratory committee to run as Chancellor.

After further thought, I am declining to run. While I certainly will stay involved with the CDS, I simply do not have enough time to persue the Chancellorship this term.

With that in mind, I hope the next Chancellor keeps in mind this advice from the Tao Te Ching:

"The best leaders are those the people hardly know exist.
The next best is a leader who is loved and praised.
Next comes the one who is feared.
The worst one is the leader that is despised.

If you don't trust the people,
they will become untrustworthy.

The best leaders value their words, and use them sparingly.
When she has accomplished her task,
the people say, "Amazing:
we did it, all by ourselves!" "

Just a question for anyone that is wanting to run, are we going to have a Q&A session or a debate, or anything of that nature? I get the general feeling that as of right now it seems that just Michel and myself are running. But of course we still have a week to go.

I understand that Moon is also running. True?

Let's keep things simple enough to be fair, substantive enough to be effective, and insightful enough to be good.

That was my understanding also. She has been out of touch for more than a day (very rare.)

Isn't Moon disqualified owing to her incoming RA position?

[quote="The Constitution":2lpensiw]The Chancellor may not be elected to or serve on the Representative Assembly, nor serve on the Scientific Council. The Chancellor may hold a position in the Artisanal Collective but may not vote therein.

My understanding was that an RA member could not serve as Chancellor and remain a member of the RA. In that case she would have to give up her seat if elected.

In which case the following , from Article IV, Section 2, would come into play:

[quote:3a42s4io]In the event that a faction, via resignation or impeachment, exhausts its list of eligible RA members drawn up at the previous general election during the course of an RA term:

1) If the faction no longer meets the constitutional requirements or if no members of the faction are willing to serve, there shall be a special election to fill, for the remainder of the term, the seats left vacant.

2) If the faction the list of which is exhausted still meets constitutional requirements as spelled out in Article V and there are members of that faction, who did not stand in the previous general election, willing to fill the vacated seats, members of the affected faction shall rank those candidates to fill the vacated seats as they do in the general election.[/quote:3a42s4io]

Ah, so let's see: Moon, one the 3 current Guild leaders, freshly elected as RA member, would resign her seat in order to become Chancellor, while her RA seat would be filled by an individual whose name had not even figured on the ballot vote, to be decided upon by the 9 members of the CSDF - member who, once so "elected" would have 1 of 7 votes deciding who will be our next Chancellor???

No one is better suited than Moon to lead the Guild; and I have no doubt that she will make an excellent RA member or an outstanding Chancellor; -but from the point of view of both democratc theory and practice, this is nothing less than mind-bogling...

moon's eligibility to run for chancelor

Post by yogeswari »

friends,

my reading of the constitution suggests it is similar to the situation in the US, of a sitting US senator or other elected official running for the presidency. one does not have to resign their current seat to run for the executive post. resignation would occur only if that person was elected executive.

therefore, it looks as if moon - should she choose to run - would be eligible. and i do hope she chooses to run!
