New Land Management Tools in Preview 1.12

Post by Sudane Erato »

I won't say "at long last", but, it appears that perhaps the new group tools (and the related private sim land management tools) are at least "within sight" by the fact of being shown in the 1.12 Preview.

Great consideration has gone into the present system by which citizenship in NStadt is tied to land ownership. A lot of bureaucratic contortion has gone into making this work, centered principally on the fact that while you, the individual, are the legal citizen of the City, it is your group which is the legal owner of the land.

At first glance, the new tools will not fundamentally alter this arrangement. BUT, they will enable it to be clearer, easier to implement, and much simpler for the citizen to understand exactly what they can do with their land, and what they can't. Of course, the new tools may also introduce new problems.

A second huge new benefit to our City will be the group communication tools. For the first time, it really WILL provide a function for a group called Neufreistadt, Colonia Nova, CDS ... whatever.

And there is also what at first glance appears to be a rather complex group structure feature... something we will definitely want to understand thoroughly, and something we never DID understand thoroughly in the current system... leading to many of the problems we have just been thru.

Might I propose to the forum administrator that a new forum be created just for discussion of these new features. They will have profound impact on our system going forward, and they will *definitely* require new legislation regarding systems and procedures.

Very interesting.....

One thing is we can dispose of the group-deed workaround, although I for one intend to keep my land deeded so I can access it with my alt.

Also, the new group tools mean instead of many seperate groups, we can have one or two over-arching "NFS" groups and simply make multiple roles. the downside is there's still the single "owner" role, but the situation won't be [i:1qfxjjsv]worse[/i:1qfxjjsv] than what we have currently!

I have seen the new group tools but briefly (and tried to by some land in Preview, just to understand how they related to land), but I must admit that I was rather impressed by them. First, it's clear that it's a completely different team that has designed those; the interface and even the design is different, a bit unsettling perhaps, just because they look much better than the rest of the interface. An example: defining roles uses a "directory system" with folders, which are clearly much better designed than the system used for the inventory! (I imagine that people will be yelling for having the same interface for both...)

Tiny details aside, yes, this will surely meet most of our current difficulties, even to the point of being able to discuss and vote upon proposals for a week or so using [i:1ozerpbc]working[/i:1ozerpbc] tools... and naturally enough, the whole concept of having covenants tied to the land, which I couldn't understand (yet) how it worked; apparently, the land is still tied to a group (or to an estate?), but it's truly "owned", and cannot be resold... so, at this point, it's still a mystery for me to understand how it all fits together.

If you think it's important to create just a special forum group for discussing the new group tools, I'll be happy to set one up.
