Town Hall Meeting in Neualtenburg this weekend? (3 or 4)

Post by Gwyneth Llewelyn »

Hello all,

A few of us are interested in discussing recent events and planning the next steps among all. I wonder if we can set up a time that during this weekend that is possible for most of us. What time would you prefer?

On the agenda:

- Planning the rebuilding
- Replying to the invitation for being present at the SL Third Anniversary

Don't you agree it would be better if we kept the discussion of this in the general discussion forum? I like to perceive this forum as a sort of big billboard where people can announce their events secure in the knowledge that it won't be drowned out by general discussion? :-)

... and what do you know? The moderation tools work and everything!

Duly moved to the General Discussion forum :)

BTW, best suggestion so far for the time: 9 AM SL time on Sunday.

Proposed agenda (by Diderot ;) ):

1) Should we change our name now?
2) Should we change the city layout?
3) Should we terraform the sim?
4) Should we change/liberalise the architectural theme?
5) What do we need help for and who can do it?
6) Ideas

On each question, the citizen's opinion will be gathered in the form of a non-binding vote that should aid the three branches to make their decisions.

I was looking for the "move thread" facility but I couldn't find it :-)

The proposed time is fine with me, but - is anyone actually interested in participating in this Town Hall Meeting? It'd be nice with confirmation from a few more citizens that they are going to participate. I realize it's at short notice but perhaps those unable to participate can post their opinion on each issue in this thread?

I won't be, but I'll summarize my position.

1) Should we change our name now?

Yes. The Neualtenburg name is poisoned.

2) Should we change the city layout?

It couldn't hurt.

3) Should we terraform the sim?

I don't see a need to do this for IP reasons, although setting all the parcels down another 20-30 meters to lift the clouds a bit would be nice. *smirk*

4) Should we change/liberalise the architectural theme?

I'd like to, but that's me. I was never attached to the "quaint Bavarian city" theme, although I like the idea of a city.

More absentia commentary

Post by Claude Desmoulins »

Like Aliasi, I doubt I'll be able to make it to tomorrow morning's town hall. I'll try to keep these comments to the six topics outlined by Diderot, at least for now.

1) name change

I'm torn. The existing name has a lot of associations both good and bad. I would say the biggest argument against a name change is the implicit break with our own history, but I'm growing more comfortable with that idea as time passes.

One thing we should not ignore is the real cost of a name change. I'm sure LL will charge a not insignificant sum to change the sim name, then there are the groups to recreate and move people to.

2) Layout

Why not. I'm not wedded to it. I do think it should stay densely packed. See 3) below.

3) Terraform?

first of all, I like the clouds, No one else has done a city in SL at this altitude. That said, I know many dislike them and a little cloud goes a long way. I do worry about forcing other sims we add later to be at the same stratospheric heights. Much of the city layout is driven by the topography. The two must be addressed as a package.

If we want to leave the city high up, perhaps we could create a steeper slope, especially to the west, so an adjoining sim could be lower.

4) Theme

I'm not stuck on medieval Bavarian either, I do like something for the city proper that keeps the builds close together and enforces a pre modern architectural style. I happen to like Medieval, but that's me. If we loosen up too much, I worry that the verisimilitude of the city could be lost.

Just FYI regarding the costs of a name change I've uncovered this URL (allegedly the "private island FAQ"), which claims it costs around 18,000 L$ (i.e. 50 USD) to change the name of the sim:

I wonder if the change of name is due to a DMCA takedown notice, the charge will be forfeited ;)
