CDS Debates, Meet the Candidates party!

Post by Rose Springvale »

CDS Debates, with representatives from each faction, will be held SATURDAY July 11, at 9 am slt. Each faction will give an opening statement not to exceed 5 minutes. After opening statements, the representatives will respond to questions presented to the moderator. Each faction will be given the opportunity to reply to each questions, and answers should be two minutes or less. After all questions have been presented, or 90 minutes, whichever comes first, each faction will have the chance to give closing remarks, again not to exceed 5 minutes.

Questions should be provided by notecard delivered to the moderator during or before the debates. SC member Delia Lake has agreed to moderate the debates for this term (Thank you Delia!) The quality of the debates will depend on the quality of questions ... so start thinking!

On SUNDAY at noon, CDS is sponsoring a Meet the Candidates Beach Party. As only one representative from each faction participates in the debates, this will give all citizens a chance to meet the other candidates in the election. This is especially important for newer citizens who may not even know the "old timers." Our own Rudo Gynoid will dj, playing music from the 50s, 60s and beyond!

VOTING begins at noon and continues for ONE WEEK, ending Saturday, July 18 at noon. After results are tabulated, it is CDS custom to gather at the Thermae for the results announcement, but we won't know the timing until the votes are counted.

Questions on voting or factions can be directed to individual faction chairs, the Chancellor, current RA members, The Scientific Council Members, and i am always glad to help if i can.

I will be out of town and mostly computer-less until Tuesday, so will miss both the debate and the "meet and greet" over the weekend. But if anyone has any specidic questions for me or even just wants to chat, I'll be back on Tuesday and would be happy to get together. IM's are likely to be capped, so email me at [email protected] and we'll work something out.

Thank you, Rose. Fellow CDS citizens, please do send me your questions for the faction representatives. You may either drop me a notecard inworld or email your questions to me at [email protected].

These faction election debates are a vitally important part of setting CDS vision and direction for each new RA term so I encourage you to come and participate in this aspect of our democracy. For our new CDS citizens, this election process may be somewhat different than ones you know in RL. In keeping with our Constitution, we vote for factions rather than for individual candidates. In case you have not had a chance to read or do not remember the details, for your convenience, here is the first part of Article I of our CDS Constitution.

"Article I - The Representative Branch

Section 1 - The Representative Assembly

The Representative Assembly (RA) is a body of democratically elected factions which represent different ideological views of its citizens. Its governmental role is to pass laws and its service role is to promote the city and perform long-term planning.

Section 2 - The Representative Assembly Body

Representative seats are chosen by means of the Sainte-Laguë? method using scores generated by Borda-count ranked votes cast by citizens. The last place rank in the Borda-count shall have a score of 0; and each successively higher rank shall have a score of 1 more than the next lower rank. The citizens will also rank the list of candidates from their first pick faction to serve on the RA.

The number of representative seats in the RA is equal to the odd whole number nearest to 10% of the population, rounded down, with a minimum of five seats and a maximum of forty seats.

Each faction controls their seats and may replace members or fill seats due to vacancies as they see fit. Each seat receives a single vote."

The three currently certified factions in the CDS are the Citizen’s Social Democratic Faction (CSDF), the Democratic Pragmatist Union (DPU), and the Simplicity Party (SP). These factions have each offered some of their members as candidates to become elected Representatives in the CDS Assembly.

As posted by Claude Desmoules (June 27, 2009), the Candidates for the July RA election are as follows (alphabetical, first by faction, then by avatar first name)

Citizen’s Social Democratic Faction (CSDF)
--------
Arria Perreault
Gwyneth Llewelyn

Democratic Pragmatist Union (DPU)
------
Mikelo Serevi
Pip Torok
Sonja Strom

Simplicity Party (SP)
----
Cindy Ecksol
Robert Galland
Soro Dagostino

I'm looking forward to an informative and active debate tomorrow morning (July 11) at 9 am SLT.

Infortunately I cannot attent the debate, because I have a rl event at that time. I will be present at the party of course.

I have described my view of CDS here:

and you can read me and ask questions on my campaign blog:
