Testing social networking tool...

Post by Gwyneth Llewelyn »

Last week, the RA didn't have a quorum (unlike today, yay!), but I saw on the transcripts that people were suggesting that we experimented with some social networking site, so that we might get to know ourselves better, exchange more information about each other, share links, and so on.

Here is a possible (free and open source!) solution: http://social.slcds.info/

Enjoy :)

... I'm aware there might be some, uh, "difficulties" in getting this to work properly! Supposedly it allows you to register with your username & password from the forums. Or OpenID. Both might not be working correctly :(

Apparently, both OpenID and Gravatar are working fine. OpenID might require a refresh to work properly during the intermediate authentication procedures.

Integration with the forums isn't working at all :( I can see that some of you are registered at both, but nothing more than that :( And I've tried to create an alt here on the forums, but couldn't log in to Elgg with it :( Ah well. Nothing is perfect :/

The solution might be to get the forums working with OpenID too. Now that might break everything on the forums :D so I'll wait a few weeks to do the changes...

Tried to register, but the system didn't like my name. Soro Dagostino contained "Illegal Characters." I know I can be a curmudgeon, but "Illegal?" LOL
Let me know when they change the law? I'll try again.

Yes Gwyn, I think we have not yet started the procedures to banish Soro. Although his character may be questionable, I don't think it's illegal. :P

(Only a joke!! It didn't work for me either!)

I had a similar result at first, but realized there is a difference between the user name (which you only use to log in) and your display name. I believe the user name cannot have any spaces in it, where the display name can have special characters and spaces. So, for example, Rudeen E would not be a valid user name, but would be a valid display name. RudeenE (or Rudeen, etc.) should work as a user name, as there are no spaces.

Hope this helps,

Brian

Yes, I had the same experience, but realized that the space was the offending character in my login name and after that had no problem registering.

I wasn't sure I really needed yet another social networking site, but I have to admit that this one is pretty nice and may turn out to be useful. My CDS friends don't really need everything that shows up on my Facebook page, and my RL friends would be mystified if I started posting CDS-related stuff on my Facebook. This tool seems like a nice balance.

Hmmm, even lurching from Soro to SoroDagostino to Soro_Dagostino -- still comes up illegal.

It looks like I am in the same boat as Soro. :) I am still not able to log in either, although when I try to make a new registration it says my email address has already been registered. :?
