Re: Selection of LRA and Chancellor for 13th RA

Post by Rose Springvale »

I think any member of the new RA can and should call meetings, at least until an LRA is elected. I am proposing that we meet on Tuesday June 1 at 12 noon slt, which appears to be on most of your lists. At that point, we can elect an LRA, and go from there.

I'm willing to support other times, but we have a lot to do this term and I for one am eager to get started.

I believe that if we have a quorum on June 1, we can officially take action. The Constitution and code of laws are silent. The "old rules" would have let me take over without another election, and I'm hoping the RA will support me as LRA. If other RA members want the job, please let us know, so we can have a meaningful discussion.

Also... one thing the outgoing administration has always done is arrange for an Inaugural Ball. I've seen no mention yet.

I see no need for excessive formalism - we're all quite capable of choosing a time to meet. I strongly support a June 1 meeting: we have much to do.

arria, does this mean that no matter what, whether you're at the meeting or not, you're requesting 7 days before you cast your vote for LRA?

I can't usually make Tuesday meetings but will try for this one. I request a 7-day vote in case I can't make it.

for the sake of expediency, could an RA member submit their vote for LRA early, to the SC dean, if they already knew they would be absent and who they wanted to vote for?
The dean could hold the information until after the vote was taken and release it during the meeting. that is, if the dean were available for the meeting.

Nor do I, Kaseido ... see any need for excessive formalism, so count me in to be at that meeting.

Indeed we have much to do, so to stop it descending into pointless chat, can I suggest the barest bones of an Agenda to act as a bootstrap:

0. Consent to be recorded
1. Choose an LRA
2. Any other Business

?

because, hopefully, by then we will know how many, and who, will be willing to stand as LRA...

and when we have done this, the LRA can then substitute her/his agenda for "Any other Business"!

If this finds favour in your eyes, then we'd need some idea of who'd be willing to stand as LRA, and as soon as possible.

And if this meeting includes appointing a Chancellor, to have a clear idea of who is definitely willing to stand, and to present themselves at our meeting. We've seen what happens otherwise.

Hi Pip,

Glad to see you can be there Tuesday. The SC has made it clear that applications for chancellor will be due at midnight SLT June 1, regardless of if we meet on June 1. I think the purpose of the Tuesday June 1 meeting of the newly elected RA is solely to choose an LRA, who will then coordinate for regular meeting times and set the agenda of the first regular meeting, which is where the chancellor would be elected.

I would like the job, as I've stated. I've penciled out a list of the things we need/want to get done this term, based on the campaign statements of the candidates, and think we need to be very organized this term to accomplish our goals. If elected as LRA, I'd like to share a proposed plan of the work for the term with the group at the first meeting, which is looking like a Saturday June 5 meeting.

Another issue: The New Guild has long had a sign in their meeting room that says all meetings of the New Guild are recorded and transcripted. I think we should place one of these in the room where the RA meets as well, and dispense with the ten minutes we spend "consenting to recording." I've never heard anyone not consent, and having a sign makes it clear to latecomers and the audience that they will be recorded without having to disrupt the flow of business.

Rose, as to the consent to recording, that's a wonderful idea. The next step is for CDS to buy a recorder that works for the RA. In my terms as LRA the missing recorder was the most difficult barrier to proper recordation of the proceedings of the RA.

I further suggest that the body, or the LRA, appoint a Secretary to manage and publish the record via the Group Notice process and do the things that a official "Secretary" does in most every other parliamentary body in the world. Publish Minutes, issue certified extracts of adopted motions and many of the other things found in bylaws for organizations that adopt proper rules of order.

It would also be a good idea for the new RA to select an LRA Pro Tem (perhaps the runner up?) to act as LRA in the absence or resignation of the LRA.

This position already exists: the RA Archivist. The two past RA (10th and 11th) have forgetten this ...

Correction: in the 11th RA this was not forgotten. There were simply no volunteers for the position. As LRA I simply posted all the minutes myself. But I had no access to the portal so could do no more.

Sol, this is a bit impractical since we may not know until the meeting who all of the LRA candidates are. The 7 day vote takes care of these issues neatly, so I see no need to create another process.

And I do expect to attend the organizational meeting on June 1.
