Dianne's wonderful new flag

Post by Ashcroft Burnham »

I have spotted in the Guildhall two delightful variants on the approved flag design by Dianne (who, when I spoke to her, was more than happy for her flag to be used as our national flag). I am assuming that they are work in progress, but they are very good: they are more subtle better proportioned than Dianne's original flag outside the shop (Dianne: good job at making your flag even better!), and also carry two yellow stars: presumably, one for Neufreistadt, and one for Colonia Nova. That suggests that Dianne had intended it to be used as the flag for the Confederation of Democratic Simulators.

I know that the original proposal was to have it as a [i:332gdacw]Neufreistadt[/i:332gdacw] flag, but, since Dianne's flag design is so good, and since having lots of flags, rather than just one flag, might confuse people, I propose that we adopt Dianne's new flag as the flag of the whole Confederation of Democratic Simulators, and not just Neufreistadt.

What does everybody think?

(Incidentally, Dianne: one very small technical problem: on one side of the horizontal flag, the owl is looking to his right, whereas he is looking to his left on the other side of the flag, and on both sides of the vertical flag; easily fixed, no doubt).

You peeked! :-)

Yes I have been working on the flag that was so nicely adopted in my absence. I feel honored. I was going to announce it later today or tomorrow and put up an image or two.

The reason for the changes is twofold. The original flag was very quickly done and the owl I got out of a heraldry book. But a bit of research turned up the fact that it may actually be a more modern graphic. It is very abstract and when I looked at it closely, does not look very medieval or heraldic at all. There is also the possibility that being modern, it may be someones work and thus copyright.

The owl I replaced it with is the owl that turns up in dozens of online sources and books on heradlry and is presumably a non-copyright genuine heraldic charge. I also think it looks better.

The stars were always part of my original proposal, and again they look good so I included them, we can remove them if no one likes them. The original idea was that like the european union we would add a star for each sim, but since two look better than one and the next sim will likely happpen soon, it seemed best to go with two.

They don't *have* to stand for sims though and we dont *have* to have any more than the two. Histories of these sorts of things in RL reveal all kinds of expedient decisions in reards charges, symbols and so forth and multiple or fuzzy meanings to symbolic elements are common. We could just say that the first star is truth and the second justice and it would be just as valid.

In the end thought that the yellow was necessary to liven up the design a bit.

hopefully this image tag works and you can see it...
