Candidates, Declare!

Post by Rose Springvale »

Saturday is the Deadline for candidates to declare that they are running for Representative Assembly or Chancellor of CDS. To declare, drop a notecard on Delia Lake in world, and post on the forums. Good luck!

Hello fellow citizens...

I have to say that I'm worried that there are not enough candidates this term! I was truly hoping that there would be plenty of new citizens willing to serve and announcing their willingness here; it's time that we "oldtimers" leave the governing of our micro-nation in the hands of the current citizens, with fresh new ideas, and a new will to change the CDS towards what people want it to be.

However, on the other hand, the number of currently willing candidates is very small :( It's true that we'll have a small RA this term, but, nevertheless... we need at least a few people willing to serve!

It's only because of that that I've informed our Dean of the SC my willingness to run for the RA as a candidate for the CSDF.

I, Fern Leissa, am willing to stand for election to the CDS RA as a candidate for the Democratic Pragmatists Union (DPU).

I second Gwyneth's concern and hope that more citizens, new and old, will stand and announce their willingness to serve.

I'm declaring my candidacy for the RA. I think the idea that new people are somehow better fitted to serve than experienced ones is unenlightened. A mixture might better serve the population.

As do I, Fern ... in spades! 8)

Accordingly, I declare my willingness to stand for election to the CDS RA as a candidate for the Democratic Pragmatist Union (DPU).

It has been almost a year since I joined CDS. Yet, probably more than a year since I began following events here and sitting in at RA meetings. In that time, CDS citizens have made momentous and often gut wrenching decisions. The degree of emotion felt among all citizens at these times illustrates how the people of CDS care about the future of this collective project. In a spirit of devotion toward CDS, its constitution and further development I am honored to declare myself a candidate for Chancellor as an independent.

I urge all citizens, devoted to our unique enterprise in Second Life, to come forward and submit their names for candidacy. The RA certainly needs you, but your candidacy for Chancellor is welcome also.

Thank you all,

Candidates for Chancellor may commence their campaigning.

Even though there are fewer RA Candidates than apparent seats, I would recommend that RA Candidates also develop and circulate position papers to the CDS citizenry.

Delia

Could you clarify whether there will be an election for the RA? I saw a notice to that effect but nothing on these forums. Even with fewer candidates than seats an election would allow citizens to express a preference on which candidates should be elected to the RA. It is possible that, if tested by an election, some of the current candidates would fail to get sufficient votes to be elected. I think that it's important that citizens get to choose who is (or is not) on the RA through the ballot box rather than simply 'taking who get' because too few put their names forward.

Pat,

Single Transferable Vote isn't designed as a "vote of confidence" system. One of the end states for the vote counting process is that # of remaining candidates <= # of remaining seats. We're there already.

Hi Claude

Whether it was designed that way or not, it provides voters with an opportunity to express a preference. In a democracy I should think that we would favour ensuring that citizens have that opportunity rather than taking it away from them.

Citizens will be voting in the Chancellor election in any case so there is no need to deprive them of the opportunity to vote in the RA election (and every reason to allow them to!) If an election returns all six candidates then at least they will have undergone an election and have legitimacy as RA members. If some fail to gain election that is also a good thing because it demonstrates they did not have sufficient support in the electorate and voters' wishes will have been respected. Just giving them a pass through because too few people put their names forward undermines our claim to be a democracy in my opinion.
