making items in second life...

Post by Tad Peckham »

i am not sure if this forum is the proper venue for this question, but i am interested in learning how to make items in second life using GIMP, a shareware program modeled after photoshop. does anyone have any tips on how i might learn how to do this? i know there are GIMP classes offered in sl, i'm just not sure i want to spend the L$ to take said course.

also, in a perfect world, it's nice to think that my GIMP creations could one day be featured in the marketplatz and be part of the revitalization effort going on there.

any ideas anyone?

I don't know anything about GIMP courses (search for "GIMP" in classifieds and events? Otherwise, there are plenty of non-SL, web-based tutorials for the GIMP), but all that you can do in the GIMP is make textures. That is an important function, but is only part of the object-making process: the 3d shapes (and the setting of the relationship between those shapes and textures) is all done with in-world building tools (go to a sandbox, click "build" and have fun experimenting - try making, say, a simple table for practice). I know that there are lots of courses for that, but I don't know the details. Again, the in-world search tool should help you. Alternatively ask Sudane if you have specific queries - she helped me out with the signposts, and is very nice.
