CN Infocenter Calamity

Post by Tanoujin Milestone »

I have been ghosted for a long time. I am reading the sims to get in touch again. And I am touched indeed, the prims whispering names of people I miss and let go, because presence and nothing else is reality...

CN information center: I noticed there is something wrong, a gap down to the catacombs. My mind was in my own affairs and so I did not care much. None of my business. SL weather was bad, could have been a rendering flaw.

But later on it was brought to my attention that one of my friends claims I had returned a piece of the info center's floor to him. Yes, I have this ability. No, I did not return anything by select > manage object > return > dialog confirm. I would not even return a plywood cube without explicite mandate, except on my very own parcel. Not intentionally. It made me ponder. Is it possible that I am destroying my homeland without knowing? Bizarre. The client asks twice! Anything else is beyond my control, not yet my responsibility.

I asked for proof. There should have been a message. If my friend was online, why did'nt he IM me at once? And if he was offline, why didn't he forward the email to me? Well, possibly it was lost. Moot point. Is there a known sl bug causing unintentional returns? Checked jira, found nothing.

I asked for the missing base tile, offering to fix it. The answer: It is nothing that can't be fixed easily. Do not worry, it is all just electrons and light.
Yes, I agree. Fundamental particles. Do away with grief. It can be fixed easily if you have the correct CN theme textures. It is just one prim.

I went there again. Yes, it is an easy job, but - excuse me being blunt - someone has botched it up. I, for one, prefer honesty to friendly lies. There are two prims to return. I won't do it without mandate, as I told you already.

Thank you, Shep, for soothing me. Thank you, Pip, for affirming my POV. Thank you Lilith, for providing a wall (sic) texture from the original CN set.

I provisionally patched it. The patch is for sale (zero L$) full perm. Feel free to take care of it while I am looking for a matching floor texture.

I do not put the blame on anyone, neither do I take it. The catacombs are a very special place. In my opinion they should be *almost* completely closed and hidden, to provide that certain magic moment when it happens for the first time. Please do not crack it just because it is an old chestnut to you...

By the way, Tor told me to remember him to you! He is sorry for the withdrawal forced upon him. A former sl been-to myself, I felt entitled to reply that we all understand and wish it was temporarily. Quite a clumsy unauthorized attempt to pay back what he gave me when he welcomed me to CDS.

That's very odd about the couple of prims Tanoujin, but of course if you have the authority it's easy to make a mistake with a prim selection, if SL is being laggy particularly. I mistakenly returned a couple of Monastery prims a while back when I was sending back snowy trees after the spring thaw ;) so I know it can happen. (Arria was kindly understanding about it.)

So nice to have you back in the CDS as an active member! I am happy to get to know you.

The pleasure is all mine, Rosie. Problem fixed, solution approved by Trebor. Shep suggested to place some tables and chairs there. I like that idea. Sticking to "select only my objects" now. See you at the guild meeting sun 9 am

Thank you Shep, we share some patriotic feelings, don't we? But I am not so convinced of my abilities on a technical level. Nevertheless I could try to submit a small amount of non-fictional text to an editor. Once I tried to improve a lemma on the german wikipedia which turned out as an herculean task that took me half a year. I left it as soon as it was over the worst and prayed for a tough reviser to kick all the bad compromises I had to concede to prevent multiple edit wars. And this was in my first language.

Talking about portal > CDS Info > CDS Visitors
http://portal.slcds.info/index.php/orig ... -visitors/
which displays dummy text: it starts with the name of the page: do we need to set visitors apart from locals? I would not define a target group here other than "people interested in basic knowledge" and simply call it FAQ accordingly.

Let us recycle scattered info text like the hippo box notecard etc, the corresponding questions could be emulated.
We would need to collect some genuine questions then. The welcome committee could collect them right away. Hopefully someone will use the comment function to ask questions on the page itself, a selection could be incorporated into the page body later on. Do you see what we are getting roped into? Much effort... links to other souces like the sl knowledge base would reduce that a little. I mean, I am not in the mood to explain the "about land" tab. Another trap:

Q: "Why does the hippo box state there are 0 prims allowed on my parcel?"
A: "because the management has limited manpower and therefore other priorities but to manually cherish the database of hippo functions that mirror the about land tab and can not be disabled" :?

I suggest this so far (to be included into a section titled Parcel Management or alike):

Q: "Why doesn't my Hippo box answer chat text on touch?"
A: "The box whispers in a range of 10m. Move closer to the box to receive the parcel name, box location, monthly tier, contract period specification, owner, remaining ownership time and expiration date."

Q: "I have bought the parcel, but the hippo box won't let me pay and states it is not mine at all"
A: "Don't worry, you purchased the parcel from another citizen who's contract has not yet expired. An automated notification has already been sent to the land management. They will reset the box and call you back. Just make sure to pay the box within 24 hours. Feel free to contact a land manager [insert names], the welcome team [inquiry button?] or ask the seller to use the refund function of the box if you want to speed up the process."

phew... collect 10 other pairs of QA here, publish on the portal to get rid of lore ipsum and move on to other tasks?

Oh, I think portal maintenance is mostly executive. And we all are called upon to volunteer by the chancellor as long as the deputy positions are vacant. I see Pat doing an important job on the portal at the moment. The guild could assure quality as soon as it is in an operational state - by order of the executive. Looks like the designated guild master is already on that job (kind of normative power of the facts ;). I see the portal as our front door. We should stick to non controversial content there. Anyone with the appropriate skills and permissions can replace the dummy text with our suggestions. Content, typos, grammar, all ok? Take it, change it, broadcast it. I do not care, hehe.

I got another one:

Q: "I am premium. Why must I pay monthly tier for my first 512 sqm here?"
A: "This is not the mainland but a private estate, ruled and managed by its inhabitants. Your free 512 sqm on the mainland are not affected. You will gain citizen status and have a say in our community as soon as you paid you tier. Consult the about land tab to learn more. If you accidently purchased a parcel and seek an avoidance of contract contact the land management and ask for refund."
