Next steps for a new Schloss

Post by Sudane Erato »

Yesterday the CDS RA approved the proposal initiated by Rosie Gray and myself to build a new Schloss for the CDS. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to create a wonderful addition to the CDS landscape.

The first public step of the approved proposal is for Rosie and myself to present to the community a quantity of material which inspires and motivates the process by which we turn ideas into "concrete" buildings. We hope that you'll look at the pictures presented here, as well as the text discussion from 2009, and offer ideas and opinions. All feedback is profoundly welcome. We strongly urge you to provide such feedback in the forums. If for any reason you can't, please give one of us a notecard with your thoughts, and we'll post it with your name in the forum.

The build will be created offsite so as not to burden our already overburdened sims with more prims. When there is something to see, we'll provide the landmark, so you can visit and offer further thoughts. As noted in the proposal, we will create the major external part of the build off-site, but in order to truly complete a building which relates organically to its surroundings, we'll need to put the build in its intended place. Before we remove the existing Schloss in order to do this, we will again request the approval of the Chancellor and the RA. As noted in the meeting yesterday, Rosie and I will leave it to the Chancellor and the RA to sort out the mechanism of that official approval.

We also strongly support the proposal which Calli made at the meeting to document the existing Schloss through pictures and videos, before it is removed. I'll be happy to act as a repository of all such material, and also happy to assemble it in some nice and appreciative fashion. Pictures, videos, and text would be welcome from anyone wishing to contribute... please send them if at all possible to my email, [email protected]. If you'd like to contribute, please don't procrastinate!

So... a review of the planning and inspiration for the new Schloss.

This project was actually begun in 2009 when Moon Adamant and the New Guild formed a working group to assemble feedback and images. A great deal of useful material was collected, but sadly the subsequent course of events resulted in a discontinuance of the project. The material is far to valuable to overlook, so I have retrieved it and edited it somewhat for a presentation at this time.

The 2009 collaborative text document is here:
https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id ... 7PivH2JWxg

and the associated images which Moon collected are located here:
https://docs.google.com/present/view?id ... 308hww78dc

In preparation for this project, Rosie and I absorbed the very useful information presented in that material. Taking it all in, we realized that the primary image for a "Bavarian schloss" had to be the Schloss Neuschwanstein, well known to tourists and historians as the very symbol of Bavarian "schloss-ness". Accordingly, Rosie collected the following beautiful set of pictures of that important building, found here:
https://docs.google.com/presentation/pu ... ayms=10000

Finally, I created a working plot plan from which we can plan construction
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub ... utput=html

I'll place this text into a notecard and distribute it to all members of the CDS group. We look forward to your thoughts and comments.

My apologies. The link presented to the 2009 presentation of images by Moon was faulty. I have corrected that link in the post above, and also in the related text document. Please let me know if you still have trouble accessing it.

Thx!

Rosie and Sudane, thank you for initializing the construction of a new Schloss. I believe it is a good initiative. I have some remarks.

- Of course I support the fact the current Schloss has to be archived
- Please keep in mind that the castle Neuschwanstein is a fantasy castle built by the King Louis the Second in the second part of 19e century. It is not an authentic castle. The King wanted especially to create a place inspired by the operas of Richard Wagner. In its time it was already seen as a fantasy. The State of Bavaria decided not to achieve it after the death of the king and the castle was open to the public. Of course it is a famous touristic attraction. This castle is also one of the inspiration of the for the castle of Snow White in the cartoon made by Disney. Think twice before to add a cartoon style piece in our sims !
- I much prefer the pictures collected by Moon as inspiration for the new Schloss. An authentic castle from the Middle Age would better fit in the town of Neufreistadt.
- Before to build the new Schloss, please make some drawings of it. It will be easier to see if it fits in NFS.

Hi all!

First of all, many thanks to Sudane and Rosie for this initiative! :)

I won't review all the lengthy collaborative document... the doc is there, thanks to all the contributors who provided thoughtful insights :) The debate created a very significant concept for the Schloss-to-be... now, this is extremely hard to do using words, so congrats everyone! :D

I always supported the idea of a deep change of the Schloss for very functional reasons: excessive primcount, difficult adaptation of spaces to changing functions and needs, etc. I am glad these questions are going to be addressed, specially now that there are features in SL which didn't exist back then - for example, larger prim dimensions which will ease the unavoidable work issues a great deal indeed. And new technical features always allow for creative innovation in the conceptual process - Rosie and Sudane do have this creativity skill, and so I am very much looking forward to the result! :)

So, the discussion was lengthy indeed, but it was very purposeful, as a mature process has emerged - I am very glad that heritage documentation will be collected about the old Schloss, as it defined the landscape (and somehow the actual living of the territory too) of the CDS for a long time. I find that making the heritage doc collaborative is a very good idea, as a richer, wider collection can be achieved that way.

Cheers!

Eudaimonia now!

Having read the collaborative document (thanks for providing it!) in which the Nuremberg castle is mentioned, knowing the Rothenburg castle has been dismantled in the 14th century, cautiously supporting the dun provided by Arria here in this thread, I would like to show you this:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File% ... fnahme.JPG

as an inspiration. This is one of the paragons that were on Ludwig's mind. Enter the king, if you like. You may want to have a bit more grip to reality compared to him. I do not demand anything. I offer to get a floor plan and snapshots from inside. It is not far away, easy to have some original research...

edit: and by the way, no, i still can't access Moon's images and wonder if it is just me

Try the link again Tan. I think there was a permissions problem, which I've fixed (hopefully).
