territorial cohesiveness (poll)

Post by Dianne »

I have seen a bit of discussion on this topic recently on other threads and I made a suggestion on one of them that we should actively seek to join NC onto Neufreistadt as was envisioned in the original plan AFAIK. I think it could be done with a minimal fuss and only a small fee charged by LL the only "downside" being that the never-ending N'Stadt fog would be gone (if that is indeed a downside). In any case we could re-create the fog with the artificial weather systems we are currently using for snow.

My suggestion seems to have landed with a thud and no one has commented on it, so this is an attempt to garner some opinion on whether anyone else sees this as a worthwhile goal or is dead set against it and so on.

To refresh folks on the theory behind it, the current shape of the ground in the two sims would fit perfectly together if they were joined and would require minimal or no terraforming with [b:1xapnxs0]one[/b:1xapnxs0] exception.

Neufreistadt is currently [i:1xapnxs0]higher[/i:1xapnxs0] in elevation than NC so all the land in NStad't would have to be [i:1xapnxs0]uniformly lowered by the some amount[/i:1xapnxs0] for the land to be able to be joined. This would be like subtracting 100 metres or something from every elevation point and every structure uniformly in N'Stadt). In the end, N'Stadt would look the same as it does now, but the elevation would be lower, and thus no clouds except those we create artificially.

Yes, I know teleporting should make irrelevant the contiguity of sims, but I think it would be nice to walk from NFS to CN.

I also agree that we should join the two sims but I think at the present stage it would be a waste of money to spend 50 USD to get LL to move one of the sims physically. I'd rather achieve the connection by putting a sim in between.

It will take some time until Linden Labs delivers a new type sim and one that will be more expensive. Acording to the Linden Blog it will take 6 weeks to clear up the backlog. That is of course if something does not set back their schedule ;)

Agreed. However, now that the decision has been taken to make the sims seperate it is not a matter of urgency for me to achieve geographic cohesion between the two sims since I expect the CDS and my residence in it to last a long time. I'd prefer for the cohesion to be attained as part of the next planning cycle rather than spending a not insignificant amount of money and presumably diverting a lot of energy on behalf of the residents to lower all the rezzed objects by 100 metre.

It's been known to happen ;-)

One of the advantages in having separate sims is that it makes it obvious that the CDS is about more than just a specific locality in SecondLife, and clear that we are a potentially grid-wide operation.

Territoriality.

Post by michelmanen »

I entirely agree. There is no practical need to unite DSC sims territorially, and many advantages in keeping them separate -such as emphasizing the unique characteristics of each and their diversity in time and space.

I would like the factions to make a comment on this. This proposal deserves a vote, Yea or Nye.
So often issues are brought up in the forums to just fade away, they are not given a chance to be heard from the community at large.
Thus as a citizen I make this move to convert Dianne's posting into a bill and put forward it to the RA for a vote.

I think it would be a waste of money, I don't see any great disadvantages to having the two sims separate as they are now. I'd like to 'fill in the gap' creatively rather than push them together now. I rather like the idea of the CDS developing into a number of densely-populated urban areas (like Neufreistadt and Colonia Nova) with wilderness, rural or just less densely-populated sims in between. Also, I've grown to like the clouds in NFS (even if I usually turn them off in practice) as it adds to the character of the sim. Finally, the Sim Planning Committee considered this issue and decided on the current solution to the problem of 'where to put CN' and I haven't seen any powerful arguments to overturn that decision.

To give a personal example of why I don't think it's (much) of an issue: I own land in Gallinas sim (my main home) and Orient (where my parade of shops is located). I used to fly from one to the other (they're very close, can't quite recall if they're next to each other) but nowadays I just tp - it's faster and less prone to going wrong. Both territories still feel like 'mine' though :)

That's just my personal opinion, not a faction statement. I'm not sure that I'd expect the factions to have a position on this, it doesn't seem like a 'party political' issue to me. I expect the RA will have to make a ruling if a Bill is put to it for voting. I think I'd argue for a 'free vote' in those circumstances i.e. for RA members to vote according to their own views given that this was not addressed in either party's election programme and is not a problem that has a 'party political' dimension to it.

There is a great deal to be said for not un-making decisions that have recently been made after debate and deliberation unless it is overwhelmingly and unquestionably obvious that something is drastically wrong with what has been decided. Stability is important: there is no point in people putting a great deal of work into making decisions if it is not true that the overwhelming probability is that, once the decision is made, it will be effective indefinitely unless something goes very seriously wrong. There is also much to be said for not wasting our efforts going over and over the same issues again, but, once an issue has been finally decided, moving on and meeting new challenges, and exploiting new opportunities.
