Why?

Post by Salzie Sachertorte »

Seeing as how peasants aren't allowed to post in the Government Threads, let me quote a posting there:

[quote:27pzof2d]The RA will hold an extraordinary meeting with the Chancellor 20 March at 7 pm SLT in the Rathaus.[/quote:27pzof2d]

[i:27pzof2d]"If an informed citizenry is to meaningfully participate in government or at least understand why government acts affecting their daily lives are taken, the process of decision making as well as the end results must be conducted in full view of the governed."[/i:27pzof2d]

Oklahoma Ass'n of Municipal Attorneys v. State, 577 P.2d 1310, 1313-14 (Okla. 1978).

Usually, in a well-run government, there are things known as Sunshine Laws, which require not only public notice (time, date, place) of all government meetings, but also the subject matter of said meeting, including that intended for consideration for at any contemplated closed session, in such form that is reasonably likely to apprise members of the public thereof.

Remember one of the most basic elements of government - the public is entitled to the fullest and most complete information compatible with the conduct of government business.

So - why the meeting?

That also raises another question - when can we expect to see the RA meeting transcripts posted? The newest one is from the Feburary 18th meeting.

There's no sinister plan here, Salzie. It's a simple time-zone and job conflict. I cannot make the regular RA meeting. The Constitution mandates I meet with the RA at least once a month. Therefore, the RA and I are 'meeting halfway' by a special meeting at another time.

There's certainly nothing prohibiting anyone from showing up. Expect to be bored shitless, though. :)

I'm not saying there is a sinister plan.

Rather, I'm saying if we insist we are a "real" government, we should act like one, which includes notices to the citizenry and posting the deliberations of the government in a timely manner.

Yep, agree .. the transcripts are pretty important if you want an involved/well-informed citizenry .. And next to a few button presses it's only ctrl-c, ctrl-v.

RA Archivist

Post by Pelanor Eldrich »

I think this points to the need to fill the RA archivist post. I don't think it's that the RA doesn't want to share information, but rather the wiki and website updates are labor intensive. There's plenty of outdated stuff on the wiki and on the websites. I wouldn't mind seeing somewhat more substantive (albeit factual) "Actions of the RA" postings when the transcripts aren't available.
